Introduction
Three goals of public education about deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) are to:
- Increase awareness of symptoms that require immediate medical attention
- Encourage people to stay physically active
- Provide access to programs, services and care that contribute to preventive actions
Strategies to prevent DVT include developing an awareness of deep-vein
thrombosis dangers as well as providing access to programs, services and
care. Access to prevention activities breaks many barriers that inhibit
good intentions. Access makes it easier for older adults to increase
physical activity, improve self-care and create partnerships with
healthcare providers in planning for prevention.
This chapter will discuss how to reach these three goals through
community and media communications and partnerships with key healthcare
providers.
