Making Presentations

If you hold a DVT forum, you may want to have a medical expert on hand to develop part of the presentation and to answer medical questions. The National Alliance for Thrombosis and Thrombophilia (NATT) is developing a speaker's bureau to help identify local experts; however, it is a small organization and has not yet developed information for all geographic areas. NATT can also identify DVT patients willing to share their stories.

In preparing for your presentation or forum, consider the following checklist:

Checklist Preparing for Your Presentation or Forum
Obtain or prepare a background information sheet on DVT and/or pulmonary embolism (PE), identifying:
  • Contributing factors
  • Prevention
  • Symptoms
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
The backgrounder can be used as a handout, posted on your website, and shared with the media, patients, consumers and healthcare professionals.
Communicate with older adult members in your organization through a message from your organization's leader.
  1. Emphasize:
    • Why older adults need to know about DVT
    • Why older adults should practice DVT prevention
    • What they can do to prevent it
  2. Identify:
    • Local resources
    • Support groups
    • Educational materials
    • Physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of DVT (if appropriate for your organization)
Place articles in your organization's newsletter that explain DVT, why it is important, and the need for more awareness.
Prepare educational materials, including an easy-to-understand glossary of key terms related to DVT, a frequently-asked-questions guide and a list of resources. Reach out to other professionals in medical facilities, other organizations and DVT coalitions. See what materials they already have and what outreach efforts they have made.
Prepare press releases and public service announcements to educate the public about DVT or announce an awareness event that you are holding.
