"Alcohol, Medications and Aging"
Program Description
"Alcohol, Medications and Aging" is a web-based training program that is designed to teach you about key issues related to alcohol and medication use, misuse and abuse in later life. The program includes six individual modules:
- Overview--What Everyone Should Know About Alcohol and Medications in Later Life
- Detecting Alcohol Abuse in Older Adults
- Patterns of Alcohol Ause
- Barriers to Recognizing and Treating Alcohol Abuse in Older Adults
- Assessing Alcohol Problems of Older Adults
- Intervention, Treatment, and Education
A seventh module provides additional resources on these topics, including books, articles, videos, training materials and Web site, with links to recommended sites. It also includes several resources for consumers.
Who is the Program for?
The Overview section of "Alcohol, Medications and Aging" contains basic material that everyone, including older adults and their family members should know about safe use of alcohol and prescription medications, as well as important information about how and why these substances can be misused or abused in later life.
The other five modules contain more clinical information about detecting abuse or misuse, assessing an older person who may be having a drinking or substance abuse problem and providing or finding an appropriate intervention and treatment. This material is designed for :
- nurses, nurses aides and other healthcare workers
- psychologists, social workers, counselors and other mental health worker
- residential facility staff
- activity and program directors
- substance abuse professionals
- and anyone working with older adults and family members
