For philanthropists and scholars, policy makers, advocates, popular authors, and nonprofit entrepreneurs, civic engagement has become the mantra of the day in aging. With so much attention, and some confusion, surrounding the phenomenon, it's time to step back and ask, What does civic engagement mean? Why does it matter now? And what are the implications of a civically engaged older population -- for older people themselves, for those who work with them and their families, and for the larger community?
