Permissions

General Policies
Written permission must be received from ASA to reprint any of ASA's copyrighted material. This includes, but is not limited to, articles from Generations and Aging Today , as well as all newsletters, marketing materials, conference programs and special-project publications.

Written permission is required for all forms of reproduction, including, but not limited to, photocopying, reprinting, electronic distribution and Internet publishing.

Authors retain the right to reproduce their own material in any form free of charge, including in any publication for which they serve as editor or author. Written permission is required and ASA's copyright credit must be included.

In any reproduction of copyrighted material, the text must be reprinted exactly as originally published, and any extract from a longer work must be identified as such.

Educational/Nonprofit Use
  1. Articles may be reproduced for classroom or reserve library use, password-protected online-learning courses, or other nonprofit, educational use at no charge if the number of copies does not exceed 100 or if no more than 100 people will be viewing an electronic version of the article. Written permission from ASA is required.

  2. Permission to reprint more than 100 copies of any article requires the following payment to ASA, in addition to written permission.
  3. 101 to 200 copies $25 per article
    201 to 300 copies $30 per article
    301 to 400 copies $40 per article
    401 to 499 copies $50 per article

  4. If between 25 and 50 copies of 3 or more articles from the same volume or issue are to be reproduced for use by the same institution, a fee of $3 per article will be charged. License to make between 50 and 100 copies costs $5 an article, and license to make over 100, $10 an article. Written permission from ASA is required.

  5. No more than half of the articles in any volume or issue may be reproduced at one time by one requester, unless no back issues of the publication are still in print.

  6. In a publication of 500 copies or more , reproduction of any portion(s) of an article requires written permission and payment of $40 per original page , or part thereof. Authorization to reprint will be sent upon receipt of payment. Permission also is contingent on the publisher obtaining written permission from the author of the article.
For-Profit Use

Articles may be reproduced by for-profit publishers at a rate that will be proportional to the number of copies being made. Contact ASA's permissions department for more information.

Please provide the following information:

  • What the reprints will be used for
  • Nonprofit or for-profit status
  • Number of copies to be made
  • Requester's complete contact information (name, organization, mailing address; phone and fax numbers; e-mail address; web address)
