MindAlert
Sponsored by the MetLife Foundation

APPLY NOW to host a MindAlert training
Deadline: May 2, 2008

The MindAlert Program seeks to disseminate research and innovative practices that address the steps that older adults can take to maintain and enhance cognitive and mental functions in their later years. The program was established by the American Society on Aging (ASA) in 2001 and is supported with funding from MetLife Foundation.

The old adage of "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is no longer applicable to human beings. Recent biological and psychological research has shown that, contrary to popular belief, the brain can grow new cells throughout the aging process. Mental fitness can be thought of as the tools that facilitate the process. By being curious, creative, optimistic, and flexible, one can challenge his/her brain to make new connections in such vital areas as the hippocampus, which is responsible for learning and memory. Many "brain exercises" currently exist which are aimed at enhancing alertness, problem solving, clear thinking, goal setting, learning and memory.
