Purpose
of Award
The American Society
on Aging (ASA), in conjunction with its Business Forum on Aging, is now soliciting nominations for its 17th annual Business
and Aging Awards. The awards recognize for-profit companies for exemplary
programs and services that meet the needs of older people and their families,
expand public awareness of the private sector's increasing involvement
with older adults and create performance models for other companies to
emulate.
Examples include human
resources programs, initiatives responding to community aging needs, employment
and volunteer programs for older workers and retirees, and work and family
benefits and initiatives.

Eligibility
For-profit companies
of all sizes are eligible. There are two ways to be nominated:
- Any ASA member
or staff member may recommend a company for nomination. Discussions
with the company in advance of the nomination is recommended but not
required. With such nominations, ASA will contact the company to determine
if it wants to proceed with the nomination.
- A company may
nominate itself and submit the materials by the due date.
Companies will be
judged in two categories: small and large. Companies of 50 employees or
less are encouraged to apply. Nonprofit organizations are not eligible
for the Business and Aging Awards. Neither are individuals, foundations,
and winners from the previous year. Businesses who partner with nonprofit
agencies to provide services to elders are eligible for these awards.

Criteria
Nominees will be
judged on the following:
- Originality and
innovation. (20 points)
- Effectiveness
of programs or services in meeting the needs of the people for whom
they are designed. (20 points)
- Impact on other
companies and the general public. (20 points)
Other Criteria
Considered:
- Continuity of effort.
Programs or services must be an integral part of the company and its
ongoing functions. (10 points)
- Older adults'
awareness of and use of the programs or services for which the company
is nominated. (10 points)
- Consistency of
efforts to avoid age-related stereotypes in advertising or promoting
the program or service. (10 points)

Materials
to Be Submitted
For a nomination
to be ready for review, seven (7) complete sets of the following must be
submitted:
- Completed nomination
form. (Download the PDF file)
- Company's annual
report (if available).
- Typed description
of how the company meets the criteria.
- Materials developed
by the company that describe the program or service (e.g., advertising,
employee handbooks, community service materials). Packaging of materials
is at the discretion of the nominee, but the format should be easy for
the review panel to use.
- Names, addresses
and telephone numbers of two additional people within the company whom
the selection panel can contact to verify statements made in the nomination.

Recognition
The ASA/BFA Business
and Aging Awards will be presented at the 2006 Joint Conference of The National Council on the Aging and the American Society on Aging, to be held in Anaheim, California from March 16-19, 2006.
Winners receive the
following:
- A one-year complimentary
membership in ASA's Business Forum on Aging.
- Complimentary registration
and one night's lodging at the Joint Conference.
- Use of the statement
"Winner of ASA's 2006 Business of the Year Award" in any publicity related
to the winning program or service.
- Recognition at
a special session at the Joint Conference that highlights the award-winning
companies' programs or services.
- A program profile
included in the Joint Conference program, which will be distributed
to 4,000 attendees and will be posted on the ASA website.
- Recognition by
peers at an awards luncheon sponsored by the Business Forum on Aging.
