Before you apply:

PURPOSE

Awards will be given to organizations that have demonstrated high-quality, innovative programs that enhance the lives of a multicultural aging population. Using the framework that supports the broader vision of diversity at the American Society on Aging, the NOMA Award for Excellence in Multicultural Aging seeks to identify and recognize best practices in developing and implementing programs and/or services that meet the needs of a multicultural aging population.

Winning programs will be honored at the 2006 Joint Conference of The National Council on the Aging and the American Society on Aging, to be held in Anaheim, California, March 16-19. Up to three programs will receive cash awards of $1,500, one complimentary conference registration, one night's lodging for one person at the conference and a one-year complimentary membership to ASA and the Network on Multicultural Aging (NOMA).

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible applicants must:
  1. Be an organization or have an affiliation with an organization that focuses on providing information and services to an aging population.
  2. Have a program and/ or service targeted to a multicultural aging population that has been tested, has a proven and successful track record, and has been in existence for a minimum of one year.
  3. The applicant or organization must have a membership with ASA. you may apply now, or anytime at your convenience at www.asaging.org/join
  4. Agree to present the winning program at the 2006 NCOA/ASA Joint Conference.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All applications must be submitted online.

Applications are requested to be submitted online.

In addition to contact information, you will submit a single Word document using an online form that must contain the information itemized below. Do not mail any other materials to ASA. Supplemental material will not be distributed to the review committee. Narratives in formats other than Word will not be accepted.
  • Executive Summary (maximum 1 double-spaced page). The summary will be used to describe the program in all published material profiling winning programs.
  • Program Description (maximum 9 double-spaced pages). Describe the program including how long the program has been in existence, how it is organized, who is served and how many people served. Describe all services provided. In addition, address each of the following criteria:
    1. Innovation - Describe why you believe the program is innovative.
    2. Effectiveness of Programming in Meeting the Needs of a Multicultural Population - Describe how the multicultural group or groups whose needs the program addresses benefited from the program or service. Describe how quality and effectiveness is defined and measured for your program. Explain how the benefits have been measured, and provide at least one measurable outcome of the program.
    3. Potential for Replication - Describe how the program could be replicated in other areas or settings and what tools you have created to help others replicate the program.
    4. Partnerships or Coalitions - Describe how the program involves partnerships with other organizations or community groups. Describe the groups and explain their roles.
    5. Consumer Involvement - Describe how consumers were involved in the design, governance or administration of the program.
    6. Lessons Learned. Summarize the lessons you learned in developing this program and advice you would give to others who may wish to replicate your program. Describe any barriers encountered in developing and implementing the program and the strategies used to surmount these obstacles.
  • Description of Applicant Organization (1 page). Describe the applicant organization, its mission, population served, whether it is for-profit or nonprofit, how the organization and program receives its funding and any other information.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

Programs and services will be judged on the following criteria: (Note that the criteria parallel the requirements of the program narrative. Be sure the narrative addresses each criterion as well as possible.)
  1. Effectiveness of the program in meeting the needs of a multicultural aging population (35 points)
  2. Innovation (30 points)
  3. Potential for replication (15 points)
  4. Involvement of organizations through partnerships or coalitions (10 points)
  5. Involvement of consumers in program design, governance, etc. (10 points)
