Introduction: Reaching Your Audience
As discussed in earlier chapters of this module, the stigma of mental illness, including depression and anxiety, often makes older adults reluctant to attend programs on mental wellness. Even if some older adults attend a program, many are reluctant to participate in discussions and follow-up actions. Instead, approaching mental wellness as a goal to promote healthy behaviors allows us to reach the "teachable moment" with potentially depressed older people.
These programs address positive ways for older adults to engage in the practice of mental wellness. They also open the door for discussion of depression or anxieties. Talk scripts are provided, but we encourage you to use your own words, include supplemental material, and tailor the talks to your community's culture and traditions.
For a review of how to plan for your presentations, see Chapter 3 of this module.
