Policy and Advocacy

ASA may not send staffers to Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf of elders, but many organizations in our membership community certainly do. These advocates and stakeholders—many of them prominent policymakers in the aging services network—fill us in on a regular basis on their progress, whether it be fighting for elder justice, defending Social Security, supporting the beneficial policies embedded in the Affordable Care Act or pressuring a reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. Find the inside scoop on new policies affecting older adults and advocacy in the works here. And check often as the gears of government grind on: our members are there at the forefront to report on this complex landscape.

Creative Solutions Can Combat the Growing Challenge of Older Adult Isolation

posted 08.20.2018

By Romilla Batra

In 2015, Estella, a Spanish-speaking older adult living in the Los Angeles area, was diagnosed with colon cancer and forced to quit her longtime job as a nanny. While undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, Estella suffered from severe depression. She missed the children she had cared for and reported feeling hopeless. She also was experiencing insomnia, had difficulty concentrating on daily activities and her medical procedures and anxiety kept her housebound for days on end.

First Responders & Dementia

posted 07.30.2018

By Jessica Empeño

Imagine this: You knock on the door of your dad’s bedroom to see if he’s okay. All of a sudden – BANG! – then a sharp pain, and you realize you’ve been shot.

Your dad has dementia. He thought you - his daughter - were an intruder. He grabbed a gun thinking that he needed to protect himself.

What do you do? Do you call 911? Will the police understand he has dementia and he didn’t know what he was doing?  Will he be arrested?

Regional Networking Events

Regional Networking Events are opportunities for ASA members to meet in person to discuss local trends, projects, initiatives and recent developments in aging. Some topics that have been addressed in the past include: Reframing Aging, Self-care for Professionals in Aging, Livable Communities, What's New in Dementia Resources, Technology and Aging and then local matters like, Aging Policy in Illinois and The Bridge Model. These generally take the form of informal presentations by local experts in aging and/or representatives of the aging population themselves.

President Trump’s Proposal to Cut Housing Benefits Hurts America’s Elders

posted 07.24.2018

By Diane Yentel

Federal investments in affordable housing benefit us all—America’s older adults, their families and our nation. A growing body of research has found that having a stable, affordable and accessible home with access to supportive services helps older adults with aging in place and maintaining improved health and quality of life, while also reducing healthcare costs and expensive interventions.
