The roles and contributions of public health in advancing cognitive health and impairment are being established since Congress began funding CDC in 2005 to create the Healthy Brain Initiative. An initial public health Road Map, The Healthy Brain Initiative: A National Public Health Road Map to Maintaining Cognitive Health (2007), jointly produced by CDC and the Alzheimer’s Association, provided guidance and served as a catalyst for numerous accomplishments on the part of multiple stakeholders. The release of the report, CDC Healthy Brain Initiative Progress 2006-2011, documents CDC’s contributions to promoting public health surveillance; supporting environmental strategies and policies; advancing communications; and guiding applied prevention research. In July 2013, a second publication in the Road Map series was released, The Healthy Brain Initiative: The Public Health Road Map for State and National Partnerships, 2013–2018. The 2013 Road Map highlights actions that state and local public health along with their national, state and local partners can do to promote cognitive health and support individuals with cognitive impairment and their care partners. This ASA Mind Alert session will focus on CDC’s Healthy Brain Initiative’s progress, including establishment of Healthy People 2020 objectives, public health surveillance data on self-reported cognitive decline among adults aged 60 or older in 21 states, and action items in the 2013 Road Map resulting from a concept mapping process involving over 280 stakeholders.
