LGBT Aging Issues Network
LAIN - An ASA Constituent Group

About LAIN

The LGBT Aging Issues Network (LAIN) works to raise awareness about the concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) elders and about the unique barriers they encounter in gaining access to housing, healthcare, long-term care and other needed services.

LAIN seeks to foster professional development, multidisciplinary research and wide-ranging dialogue on LGBT issues in the field of aging through publications, conferences, and cosponsored events. LAIN welcomes the participation of all concerned individuals regardless of age, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Benefits of LAIN Membership

  • Publications
LAIN members receive Aging Today Online—ASA's quarterly newsletter— which includes regular articles and features for professionals addressing LGBT aging issues. Aging Today Online is the most comprehensive multidisciplinary source of information about aging published anywhere.
  • Web Resources
The LGBT Aging Resources Clearinghouse offers an annotated guide to Web resources dealing with LGBT aging, as well as an extensive list of recommended books, videos and other resources.

LAIN members can log into ASA's web site where a members-only section offers a searchable online directory of LAIN members and their interests to facilitate professional collaboration.

  • Conferences
At the ASA-NCOA Joint Conference each spring, LAIN offers a full track of LGBT-related sessions, as well as a peer group meeting, a reception, and informal opportunities for networking and socializing. In addition, LAIN organizes intensives on LGBT aging issues during ASA's regional Conferences on Aging, an annual training series conducted in Philadelphia and San Francisco for professionals who work with older adults.
  • Networking
To increase sensitivity to the needs of LGBT people ages 50-plus, LAIN fosters links among researchers, service providers, the media and other interested individuals and groups. In addition, LAIN works with LGBT organizations and publications to encourage greater understanding about the community's older adults and their concerns.

The American Society on Aging

LAIN is a constituent group of the American Society on Aging (ASA), the largest professional membership association in the field of aging in the United States. ASA's more than 6,000 members comprise a national multidisciplinary community of those who work with older adults.

LAIN membership is available at no extra charge exclusively to ASA members. Members of LAIN have access to a wealth of resources in the field of aging through ASA's publications and programs.
