AGING IN AMERICA
Last-Minute Tips for LGAIN Members
On the Way to Our Conference in D.C.

For those of you who will be attending the 2008 Aging in America Conference in Washington, D.C., later this week, here are a few last-minute tips:

  • LGAIN staff have scoured the conference program book -- all 272 pages -- to compile our annual LGBT Cheat Sheet identifying every workshop, poster session, program exchange, networking event and organizational meeting dealing with LGBT aging. This handy index lists titles, dates, times, locations and session numbers, offering a shortcut through the maze of conference activities. Copies on our traditional lavender paper will be widely available at the conference -- for instance, at the LGBT peer group meeting on Thursday, March 27, noon-1:00 p.m., in the Coolidge Room at the Marriott. To download a four-page PDF of the guide, click here:
  • For the first time, a Critical Issues in Aging session will focus on the needs of LGBT elders: Mark your calendar for Friday, March 28, at 8 a.m., for "Ten More Good Years: A Documentary Film on LGBT Aging and the Story Behind It." Filmmaker Mike Jacoby will show his completed documentary on LGBT older adults around the United States -- a film which he presented as a work in progress last year. The documentary features a number of LGAIN members discussing their efforts as advocates and services providers. Just 10 presentations at the conference are highlighted as Critical Issues in Aging sessions, so the showing of Ten More Good Years will no doubt bring LGBT aging to the attention of a wide range of conference goers. For more information on the film, visit www.tenmoregoodyears.com.
  • Be sure to save Thursday evening, March 27, for our traditional offsite welcome reception for members and friends of LGAIN. This year, the Human Rights Campaign is sponsoring an informal gathering at HRC's elegant national headquarters in D.C. A free bus will pick up conference attendees at the Marriott at 6 p.m. for transportation to the reception, where the HRC Family Project will present its work on LGBT aging issues and where we'll be treated to light refreshments and convivial conversation. The welcome reception will be a great place to kick off the conference by getting to know colleagues in LGBT aging from D.C. and from across the U.S. For full details, see page 3 of the LGBT Cheat Sheet. We are grateful to HRC for sponsoring this reception. To learn more about HRC, visit www.hrc.org.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
SAGE Conference Organizers
Seek Sessions on LGBT Aging

Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) in New York City will be presenting its fourth national conference Oct. 12-14, 2008. Session proposals are sought for the following tracks: Services and Programs; Effective Policy Strategies/Removing Barriers; Health, Wellbeing and Sexuality; Role of Research/Research to Practice. Proposals are due April 30. For more information, contact Karen Taylor, director of advocacy and training at SAGE, at ktaylor@sageusa.org or (212) 741-2247; visit the SAGE website at www.sageusa.org.

If you are accepted to present at the SAGE conference, be sure to let the LGAIN staff liaison know, as we'll be looking to all LGAIN members attending the gathering to help spread the word about the benefits of joining ASA and our network.

HERE & THERE
Events Around North America to
Focus on Needs of LGBT Elders

Upcoming events around North America will focus on LGBT aging. If you are in one of the following towns, mark your calendar. And if you know about events in your area that we should list in future issues of OUTWORD ONLINE, please send details to lgain@asaging.org.

Oakland, Calif. Barbary Lane Senior Communities, a soon-to-open LGBT elder housing community in Oakland, Calif., is sponsoring an ongoing "Anything But Ordinary" educational series on topics of interest to LGBT older adults. Barbary Lane is being developed in a converted luxury hotel from the 1920s. The public spaces have already been renovated, and the free seminars for older adults will be held in one of them -- the Anna Madrigal Terrace Room. The "Anything But Ordinary" events coming up in April are "Consumer Protection: How to Protect Yourself Against Frauds and Scams" (April 2 at 2:00 p.m.) and "Investment Strategies, Retirement Planning and Estate Planning" (April 23 at 5:00 p.m.). Both events are set for the Lake Merritt Hotel, 1800 Madison St., Oakland, Calif. To RSVP, write to tjohnson@barbarylanesenior.com. For more information, visit www.barbarylanesenior.com.

Toronto. On Wednesday, April 9, the Senior Pride Network in Toronto, Canada, will offer a daylong conference on LGBT aging: "Opening the Closet on Aging: Amazing Lives!" will focus on the special needs of LGBT and two-spirit older adults in the areas of long-term care, healthcare, mental health, homecare and recreation. A media release from the sponsors notes that the objective is to bring together services providers and members of the community "to learn, gain skills and share ideas." The conference will take place at the Metro Central YMCA, 20 Grosvenor St., in Toronto's Gay Village neighborhood; registration is $75 for professionals, complimentary for community elders. For more information or to register, contact Jack Cunningham, conference coordinator at The 519 Church Street Community Centre at seniors2@the519.org or (416) 392-6878, ext. 306.

Louisville, Colo. With support from the Open Door Fund, Boulder County Aging Services will be sponsoring a five-week art course for LGBT older adults, April 22-May 20. According to the organizers, the course will "lead the participant to a new appreciation of art. Utilizing a sketchbook, each student will explore his or her personal art process in a safe, genial and encouraging environment." Classes will be held weekly on Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., at the Louisville Senior Center, 900 W. Via Appia, Louisville, Colo. The course is free, but advance registration is required because space is limited. For more information or to register, contact LGAIN member Teresa DeAnni of Boulder County Senior Services at tdeanni@bouldercounty.org.
