Network on Environments, Services and Technologies for Maximizing Independence
NEST - An ASA Constituent Group

About NEST

Do you work with older adults who are frail or who have physical, sensory or cognitive impairments? Or are your clients aging with a disability? Are you helping them maintain quality of life and prevent more serious disability? If so, the Network on Environments, Services and Technologies for Maximizing Independence (NEST) is the right constituent group for you.

NEST brings together professionals working with older adults who have lifelong and late-life physical, sensory and/or cognitive disabilities and whose ability to function independently is threatened or compromised. We share a common goal: maximizing functional capacity and promoting independence for elders through appropriately designed environments, services and technologies. NEST members share information across the aging, disability and rehabilitation systems about:

  • Assistive technology
  • Environmental modification
  • Transportation and older driver issues
  • Emerging technologies to promote aging in place
  • Policy issues and trends
  • Universal design of products, private residences and community public spaces
  • Consumer and provider education through distance learning

Benefits of NEST Membership

  • Publications
NEST members receive a newsletter, Maximizing Human Potential — a comprehensive, ongoing source of information about resources, program models, best practices, research and policy developments, and more.
  • Web Resources
NEST's home page offers an annotated guide to Web resources dealing with maximizing independence, as well as an extensive list of recommended books, videos and other resources. A members-only section offers a searchable online directory of NEST members and their interests to facilitate professional collaboration, plus a selection of articles from Maximizing Human Potential.
  • Conferences
At the Aging in America Conference each spring, NEST offers a full track of maximizing independence-related sessions, as well as a peer group meeting, a reception, and informal opportunities for networking and socializing. In addition, NEST organizes intensives on healthcare and aging issues during ASA's regional Conferences on Aging, an annual professional development opportunity for professionals who work with older adults.
  • Networking
In addition to contact with other NEST members, NEST fosters links among practitioners, educators, researchers, policymakers, service providers, administrators, business people, and other interested individuals and groups. In addition, NEST works with other organizations and publications to encourage greater understanding about the importance of maximizing the independence of older adults.

    The American Society on Aging

NEST is a constituent group of the American Society on Aging (ASA), the largest professional membership association in the field of aging in the United States. ASA's more than 6,000 members comprise a national multidisciplinary community of those who work with older adults.

NEST membership is available at no extra charge exclusively to ASA members. Members of NEST have access to a wealth of resources in the field of aging through ASA's publications and programs.
