Healthcare and Aging Network HAN - An ASA Constituent Group |
Health Literacy and Older Adults
Nearly half of your clients and patients may have an undiagnosed condition— one that prevents them from benefiting from the treatment plans and programs that you design. Ninety million adult Americans are at risk of excess hospitalizations and poor health outcomes because of their low health literacy. The incidence of low health literacy increases with age, with the greatest burdens falling on those over 75.
ASA's Healthcare and Aging Network and the Network of Multicultural Aging developed a one-day special program on these issues for the 2005 ASA-NCOA Joint Conference. Below are the speakers' presentation materials and a four-page resource list on older adults and health literacy.
