About the New Ventures in Leadership Program

New Ventures in Leadership is a rigorous 12-month leadership development program that challenges participants complete a replicable community project and to advance to higher levels of leadership, making them more effective leaders within their organizations and communities. 

Participants will:

  • receive training and gain experience designed to improve leadership skills;
  • conduct a community project that benefits their organization and community;
  • develop a new and powerful network of peers and professional resources by attending two five-day training programs held during ASA’s Aging in America Conference in 2012 (at the program’s start) and in 2013 (at the program’s completion);
  • participate in a series of web-based sessions to expand their skills and knowledge;
  • develop and participate in an ongoing, active online learning community;
  • receive guidance and support from mentors who enhance participants’ career development and
    expand their professional network; and
  • join a prestigious group of over 330 NVL graduates who are now more effective leaders.

Partner and Employing Organization Commitments

Prospective NVL Partners commit to participating in:

  • two in-person one-week trainings in Washington, DC, March 28- April 1, 2012 and Chicago, IL, March 19-23, 2013, plus all scheduled webinars and any assigned work;
  • individual coaching sessions; and
  • project development and implementation coordinated with the applicant’s organization.

The employing organization supports the prospective NVL Partner by committing to:

  • providing necessary time away from regular work activities for attendance at the in-person programs, and during webinar and coaching sessions; and
  • supporting and developing staff relationships between the partner and other key organizational leaders (e.g., finance staff), and mentors.

Benefits to Partners and their Organizations

Partners will:

  • develop a clearer understanding of their leadership style;
  • learn how to better lead individuals and teams, building greater organizational capacity; and
  • create and nurture networks of peers, building lasting relationships that will bring crucial support, resources and connections throughout their career.

Organizations will:

  • gain staff leaders who are better prepared to help advance their missions;
  • benefit by introducing relevant projects or programs to the community they serve.

Applicants must use this online electronic format, which will allow them to save information and revise their application before submission. 

Leadership Role

Describe your current role at your organization and two career accomplishments highlighting your leadership performance and impact upon the organization. (300 words maximum)

Leadership Traits

Describe what attracted you to a career in aging, and list the personal attributes and characteristics that you believe will contribute to successful participation in the program. (300 words maximum)

Volunteer/Community Leadership Experience

Discuss any community leadership or other volunteer experiences where you have been able to effect change (e.g., church, local government, nonprofit). (300 words maximum)

Tuition Fees and Related Costs

Program tuition: $5,900

Tuition for the year-long program supports the program and faculty for two one-week, in-person learning sessions, webinars and individual coaching sessions. 

Optional Cost: Travel Package for Two In-Person Programs: $3,000

While a Partner’s organization may opt to pay for airfare and hotel accommodations to and from the program’s two five-day meetings, it can be more convenient to use our optional pre-paid travel package where ASA reserves and pays for airline flights (domestic flights only) and hotel stays (up to five nights at each one-week program).

Ground Transportation, Meals and Incidentals

Partners and their organizations are responsible for all ground transportation expenses, incidentals and meals.
