A growing number of Americans find themselves stuck in the middle: their income and assets are too great to qualify for long-term-care services and supports offered by the government and nonprofit organizations, but they are unable to afford equivalent services in the private sector. This webinar will explore how these and other challenges brought on by economic, social and demographic factors have created fertile ground for innovative solutions that are shifting the paradigm of long-term care. Participants will learn about models for aging in community and how public policies, community organizations and funders can support these efforts.

Participants in this webinar will be able to:

  • Describe how the advent of aging in community is expanding the choices of where we grow old and with whom, and how these factors impact the way we grow old, with implications for practice, research and policy;
  • Understand why changing economic, social and demographic trends are putting older middle-class Americans at greater risk of falling through the social safety net;
  • Identify three types of aging-in-community models; and,
  • Understand how and why housing policies, zoning restrictions and other government regulations impede the development and replication efforts of new models of non-institutional care, and solutions communities have employed to overcome these obstacles.

Presenter:

Janice Blanchard is president of Artisan Global Development, a social entrepreneurial enterprise dedicated to building new types of housing and neighborhoods designed to enable older adults to remain physically active, socially connected and meaningfully engaged with people of all ages in their communities. In 2013 Blanchard edited Aging in Community, a collection of 23 essays by visionary architects and planners, academics and social scientists, social entrepreneurs and elder pioneers who are all passionate about aging better, together.
