While many people with Parkinson’s Disease will experience some degree of mild cognitive change, it is estimated that at any given time, about a quarter to a third of people with Parkinson’s are experiencing dementia. Dementia is a more severe decline in cognitive abilities that leads to trouble at home, at work or in social situations. The topic can be particularly distressing for people with Parkinson’s and their care partners. What should they know and what strategies can be used to cope with its effects? Jennifer G. Goldman, M.D., is associate professor, Section of Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders, Department of Neurological Sciences, PDF Research Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Goldman is a movement disorder specialist who is board certified in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry.
