The United States is facing an end-of-life crisis. Data shows that intense “do everything” care in a person’s final days is increasing. Without clear information about treatment options and their outcomes, millions of Americans submit to end-of-life care that inflicts needless pain and suffering. Truth in Treatment is Compassion & Choices’ newest initiative to give older adults with life-threatening illnesses the permission, opportunity and courage to live life to the fullest, even as illnesses advance. This web seminar will discuss the personal advocacy challenges facing patients with life-threatening illnesses; the research conducted with patients, their loved ones, caregivers and providers to inform the creation of a new initiative for patient empowerment; and opportunities to empower patients who want to align their care with their values and priorities.

Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Describe the personal advocacy challenges facing patients when they are confronted with a life-threatening illness;
  • Describe how to empower patients to take control of their healthcare in the face of a life-threatening illness;
  • Identify tools for helping patients interact with the healthcare system during critical decision-making moments; and,
  • Understand how to support the end-of-life choice movement.

Presenter:

Kimberly Taccini, M.S., is the national director of integrated program initiatives for Compassion & Choices, the nation’s largest organization advocating to improve and expand options for end-of-life care. She has 15 years of success implementing social marketing and communications campaigns for foundations, nonprofits, and government agencies.
