GEC seminars are aimed at improving and expanding geriatric healthcare, particularly for low-income, multi-ethnic and underserved older adult population.  We offer innovative and interactive seminars on a wide range of issues, health conditionss and service delivery mode to healthcare professionals, academic leaders, and others who offer services to older adults.

Topics for the day will be:
Interdisciplinary Geriatric Assessment, Palliative Care & Ethical Issues, Culture and the Older Adult, Settings in Care and Transistions, along with a panel discussion on Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment

At the end of the day, participants in this seminar will be able to

  • Describe 2 validated physical performance screens.
  • Describe 2 validated cognitive impairment screens.
  • Name the 3 general assessment quality indicators associated with improved morbidity and mortality in the ACOVE study.
  • Identify 3 interventions demonstrated to decrease falls in the elderly.
  • Describe the goal setting function of a MOLST form.
  • Gain knowledge about the role of culture in attitudes toward bio-ethical decision making
  •  Increase understanding on how cultural diversity may impede effective service delivery.
  • Learn the definition of transitional care including key facilities and stakeholders involved in this process.
  • Learn the key determinants of “falling through the cracks”.
  • Learn how to identify patients who are at high risk for poor transitional care.
  • Learn processes to implement appropriate transitional care.
  • Learn the utility of MOLST (Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment).
